The Dutch Red Cross

Moshi-Toshi is fantastically user friendly! Moshi-Toshi - plug and play!

Peter Hilhorst / The Dutch Red Cross

The Dutch Red Cross does much good work. Besides professional staff, the 140 years young organisation can also count on the selfless input of more than 30,000 enthusiastic volunteers; people who support the aims of the organisation and offer assistance at pop concerts, sports meetings and other large public events.

These volunteers must of course be well trained in order to provide the specific care necessary. Peter Hilhorst is responsible for the coordination of the training courses in central Utrecht. “It requires lots of communication and organisation, as central Utrecht is one of the largest districts in the Netherlands. The training must include a structure for specialised courses, including first-aid and CPR.”

Good Communication Is Essential

“As coordinator, I supervise training programmes for a team of around 150 volunteers who administer emergency care. Every year we train, on average, 40 to 50 volunteers. I organise this training, maintain contact with the participants, compile schedules and ensure that teachers and locations are available. From informing people about the current range of courses to last-minute messages informing students that a teacher is sick, good communication is essential to keep our activities on track and to motivate people.”

Always Up-to-Date e-mail addresses

ldquo; We used to communicate by e-mail. A great disadvantage of a normal mailing list is that you have to keep up to date with all e-mail address alterations, which is very time consuming. Moshi-Toshi solves this problem. People can deregister their old e-mail address and simply register again with their new one. This ensures that our e-mail records are always up to date!” This function is not the only reason for which the Red Cross chose this platform. “At first, we used a free system, but this did not work very well for us. For example, some people couldn’t open our newsletters or received blank e-mails.”

Intuitive Interface

“These problems have been completely solved by our switch to Moshi-Toshi. Another reason for switching was that we felt that our information was much more secure in the hands of a professional provider. Because we are a charity, we have a very tight budget. Luckily, Moshi-Toshi turned out to be extremely affordable.” One thing that particularly struck Peter was how user-friendly the system is. “We were immediately able to get to grips with it. We first took out a free trial licence so that we could play around with what it had to offer. That turned out to be unnecessary, as the interface is so intuitive that we were able to send our first newsletter within an hour. To put it simply, Moshi-Toshi works superbly!”

Enthusiastic Reactions

“We receive many enthusiastic responses from our members and are investigating whether we can use Moshi-Toshi for much more.” One of these ideas is to use Moshi-Toshi to recruit new volunteers, as the organisation is always in need of new hands. Peter explains: “We can always use motivated people, not just in Utrecht, but throughout the country! When people hear the word ‘volunteer’, they often picture somebody with a collection box. However, our people do much more. They visit lonely senior citizens, they give temporary care to people who need it, they assist parents of handicapped children and they counsel and coach people who are threatened with social isolation. In short, caring and vital social functions.”
